Explore Haitian History at the Citadelle Laferriere

01/09/2017

Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World, the Citadelle Laferriere has become a must-see experience for anyone visiting Haiti. From its perch on the Northern coast of the island, and overlooking the bay of Cap-Haitian, this mountaintop fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most popular tourist sites in the world.

Built by Henri Christophe after Haiti gained its independence from France, the fortress was designed and built between 1805 and 1820 with the intention of keeping the country safe from further French aggression. Christophe was an instrumental leader during the country’s slave rebellion, and amassed a workforce of about 20,000 while the structure was being built.

Guests of Le Plaza Hotel wishing to visit this historic landmark will first have to travel from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien. Depending on the mode of travel, this can take anywhere from 3 ½ hours by taxi, to about 40 minutes by flying. Once in Cap-Haitien, tours are available to the Citadelle and the Sans Souci Palace ruins.

A very pleasant atmosphere and helpful staff greeted me upon arrival. Vladimir, who quickly handled my special requests, was especially helpful. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this hotel for all travelers, whether on business or vacation.

  • “Oasis”

Located off the central town square it has good security and is the obvious expat place to stay. Nice garden breakfast area near a well received pool. Tranquil after the huddle and bustle outside. Rooms are clean, beds are very comfortable and the hot showers a blessing.

  • “Great Haitian atmosphere”

We really enjoyed this property. The staff was very friendly and even went out of their way to accommodate us, by letting us check in early after flying all night. The atmosphere was very laid back just as most Haitians are.
