Noailles, a Unique Artists' Community

07/27/2016

There’s an arts community a little less than an hour away from Port-au-Prince where every house is a workshop. Noailles is a village in Croix-de-Bouquets, and you’ll hear the pinging of metal crafting even before you see the art. Appreciating everything this village has to offer takes about a half of a day, even when considering travel from Le Plaza Haiti.

In Noailles, artists build iron works out of discarded oil drums and old car parts, and make sculptures as intricate as lace and more colorful than might be expected of iron. It is not at all unusual for visitors to bring an extra suitcase just to be able to take more of this art home with them, especially since the pieces are known for being relatively inexpensive.

There are also guided tours of the village available. Voyages Lumiere offers a tour that includes transportation from Port-au-Prince, a discussion of the history and contemporary goings-on of the region, and even help bargaining for a better price (though, many visitors enjoy paying full price just to support the community). This might be a good option for anyone looking for a low-hassle, all-inclusive travel package.

There are vendors offering cold drinks within Noailles several blocks, but there are not many food offerings. Visitors should plan on bringing a packed snack or lunch so as to enjoy the village without fear of getting hungry. Myabel Cocktail Bar & Restaurant is nearby, in another part of Croix-de-Bouquets, and it’s known for traditional Haitian food and delicious rum cocktails—along with the opportunity to take away more cocktails and sauces, if desired.

Whether the day is done or there’s more fun on the itinerary, returning to Le Plaza Haiti to recuperate may be a good idea, and there’s more food and drinks to be had at the restaurants right at the hotel.

  • “Great Haitian atmosphere”

We really enjoyed this property. The staff was very friendly and even went out of their way to accommodate us, by letting us check in early after flying all night. The atmosphere was very laid back just as most Haitians are.

  • “Oasis”

Located off the central town square it has good security and is the obvious expat place to stay. Nice garden breakfast area near a well received pool. Tranquil after the huddle and bustle outside. Rooms are clean, beds are very comfortable and the hot showers a blessing.
